Ebba Klara Eriksson, Lindeskolan i Nora

Insamlingsdagen, Kenyadagen, resulterade i 120 000 kr.

I believe a fundamental key for our youth committing to voluntary work engaging in third world issues is the feeling of making an actual difference for others. Facts on the issue are not enough. You want to address the issue directly in some way, and make an impact.
Our younger generation could easily address these issues with the help of our committed teachers. The answer to why an individual person engages in voluntary work must come from one self. But how one goes about in doing so is a different matter and might require some support from others. An experience is a great teacher that makes us take action. Let our youth meet those who have made practise of their desire to help or work with people of the third world. Have them talk of their own voluntary work, why they do it, but maybe more importantly how. Create a common ground for meeting where our youth get to share the life experiences and stories of guests from the third world. Let them meet the people first hand. The only thing required for this to happen is the will of a committed teacher to take and make the time needed.
Having current and catastrophic third world issues be a starting point for future engagements would make for an easy mix with Swedish school subjects and after some introduction the student would be ready to take on projects of their own as part of their education. Show your student different means of showing solidarity. Have them attend a demonstration just for the sake of experiencing one.
Through learning by doing, meeting other people and learning from them and the knowledge of how you really can make a difference we will reach our youth and they will commit.

”Lifting Africa out of poverty”
Introduction:
I have written this paper about lifting Africa out of poverty and here are some ideas of how we can do it.
1. Food
In Africa it is very common that people are starving. This is because of two reasons.
One; it can be hard to find food and two; people are so poor that if there is food to buy they can not afford it. So first of all they need food and it is not going to solve any problems in a long-range time to send them “sandwiches” because that will create a dependence on other countries. What they need is seed for sowing so they can provide their own food and maybe sell a part of the crop to get some extra money to buy other necessary things.
2. Education
Education is also an important thing but it should not only be about ABC and 123. They need also to learn about farming. How they should cultivate the ground in the best way possible and how to keep some of the crop to replant it next season.
It should also be about how to live and use the nature, how to keep the fields in good shape and not let cattle’s damage it. Then how to preserve and protect the wild animal life and keep it in a good balance so they do not extinct any species and maybe use it to get some tourism and make some money on safaris.
Another thing that is important to learn about is how to protect you from different diseases. Many diseases are easy to avoid, for example sometimes you only have to boil the water to get all the bacteria to disappear.
One thing that can help to solve civil war is to learn about other religions in the area, how they live, what they believe in. maybe that can get them to understand each other a little bit better.
3. Smart solutions
One other thing that is hard to find in Africa is clean water and there are many diseases that spread in dirty water. What they need is some kind of water purification device to clean the water so you can use it and not get sick. Then they need to have sewage treatment works to clean the water that have been used to make it clean again so they can re-use it. Those things should be simple and adapted to them without sensitive parts, not take so much energy and not cost too much. Then we have the problem with energy, they do not have so much water so water power is not going to solve anything. You can have wind power I a small scale but it will not give so much energy but enough for small things. What Africa has is sun and they can use it in a large scale and sun can provide very much energy.
Conclusion
This is only a few things that can be done but I think that this is good enough to begin with. When they have a solid ground to stand on we can do more than this. All this is going to take some time and maybe in the future things will be different.
